Neurology in Thrissur: Award-Winning Neurological Care at Atreya Hospital

Recognized as the Best Neurology Hospital (Under 100 Beds) at the Dhanam Healthcare Award 2026, Atreya Hospital’s Department of Neurology offers specialist care for the full range of brain, spinal, and nervous system conditions, from acute stroke and epilepsy to Parkinson’s, dementia, and chronic headache, backed by a 24/7 Neuro ICU and an in-house electrophysiology lab.

About Our Department of Neurology

Neurological symptoms rarely fit a single specialty. The Department of Neurology at Atreya Hospital is structured around that reality. The team works in close coordination with Neurosurgery, Radiology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Psychiatry, so that patients with overlapping conditions receive evaluated, connected care rather than fragmented referrals.

The department’s Dhanam Healthcare Award 2026 recognition reflects this integrated model: NIMHANS- and AIIMS-trained neurologists, supported by the full infrastructure of an NABH-accredited multispeciality hospital.

Neurological Conditions We Treat

1. Stroke and cerebrovascular conditions

Ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke, transient ischemic attack (TIA), and post-stroke recovery. Acute stroke assessment is supported by 24-hour emergency services and same-visit access to in-house CT and MRI imaging.

2. Epilepsy and seizure disorders

New-onset and established epilepsy, including drug-resistant cases. Diagnosis is supported by EEG from our in-house electrophysiology lab, with long-term medication management structured around each patient’s seizure profile.

3. Movement disorders

Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and other conditions affecting movement and coordination.

4. Memory and cognitive disorders

Alzheimer’s disease, other forms of dementia, and mild cognitive impairment, managed through our dedicated Dementia and Cognitive Disorders Clinic.

5. Headache and pain disorders

Migraine, cluster headaches, tension headaches, and chronic daily headache, evaluated and managed through our dedicated Headache Clinic.

5. Other neurological conditions

Peripheral neuropathy (including diabetic neuropathy), demyelinating disorders such as multiple sclerosis, neuromuscular disorders, vertigo, sleep disorders, and facial pain conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia.

Diagnostic & Treatment Services

Accurate neurological care depends on precise diagnosis. Our department is equipped for a full range of neurological investigations and treatments.

Neurological diagnostics

Our in-house Electrophysiology Lab performs routine investigations including:

  • EEG (Electroencephalogram) for seizure evaluation and neurological monitoring
  • EMG (Electromyography) for muscle and peripheral nerve disorders
  • Evoked Potential Studies for assessing nerve conduction and neurological pathways
  • Intraoperative Monitoring during neurosurgical procedures to help protect neurological function during surgery

Neuroimaging support (MRI, CT) is available through our in-house Radiology & Imaging department, enabling most diagnostic investigations to be completed on the same visit.

Specialty outpatient clinics

Rather than a one-size-fits-all consultation, we run focused outpatient clinics that concentrate expertise on specific problem areas:

  • Headache Clinic for chronic and complex headache disorders
  • Dementia and Cognitive Disorders Clinic for memory and cognitive concerns in adults and older adults
  • Stroke Rehabilitation Clinic for structured recovery support after stroke

24/7 Neuro ICU & Neurological Emergency Care

Acute stroke, status epilepticus, traumatic brain injury, and sudden neurological deterioration are time-sensitive emergencies. The Neuro ICU at Atreya Hospital is staffed continuously by intensivists and dedicated nursing staff, with monitoring systems in place to manage critical neurological events around the clock.

For ischemic stroke, the window for effective treatment is narrow. If you or someone nearby shows sudden facial drooping, arm weakness, or difficulty speaking, call our emergency line immediately: +91 85920 00843
