Assistive devices and technologies are those whose primary purpose is to maintain or improve an individual’s functioning and independence to facilitate participation and to enhance overall well-being (WHO).

Examples of assistive devices and technologies include wheelchairs, prostheses, hearings aids, visual aids, and specialized computer software and hardware that increase mobility, hearing, vision, or communication capacities.

Assistive Device is a customized device that, based on the need of the person, is recommended, trialed and prescribed by a competent person in the field who understands disability, it’s psycho-social as well as health implications, potential risks and benefits. All AT devices including wheelchairs, canes (walking stick) and walkers are prescription devices.
